Tylendel feels out of time in Ipeshtir’s refuge – it feels as if he has been there two days and two weeks. The changing room doesn’t help.

Tylendel tells them that he feels responsible for the dire straits Mulendobra is in, and that he wants to find a way to help her.

Ipeshtir: “If she is truly the power you believe her to be I think she might manage, don’t you think?”

Tylendel thinks that she has been weakened by her imprisonment and treatment.

Ipeshtir: “Hmm. Maybe you are right then. Then I propose you go save her. A shining knight come to save the damsel in distress, eh?”

Pábes: “Don’t give him ideas. You can’t risk that, now that we’re so close, almost ready to begin. And you’re going to risk your life? Out there?”

Tylendel: “I can fly.”

Pábes: “You can fly while you’re there?”

Something sneaks by Tylendel’s leg – s small black cat.

Ipeshtir: “Ah! There you are!”

He picks up the cat.

Ipeshtir: “Allow me to introduce Socks.”

Socks: “Mew.”

Tylendel finally makes up his mind of what to do, and he starts summoning a large, wolf skin cloak.

Ipeshtir: “Socks thinks you’re quite the fellow.”

Socks: “Mew.”

The wolf skin cloak materialises in Tylendel’s hands, and he then tries to will it around Mulendobra in Eras.

Ipeshtir whispers to Socks.

Ipeshtir: “Don’t worry. He thinks he knows what he’s doing.”

The cloak disappears from Tylendel hands and reappears … perhaps somewhere. Not where he intended. Tylendel swears silently.

Ipeshtir moves closer to the mirror and studies Mulendobra.

Ipeshtir: “Poor thing. But by rights she should have frozen to death a long time ago. Am I not right? At least she does not have to worry about gangrene.”

Socks: “Mew.”

After long and careful consideration, Tylendel decides to cast a spell through the mirror to fly Mulendobra to Byrkburgh. He orders the mirror to look at her in the direction of the city, so he has a target for manoeuvring, then casts the spell and lifts her into the air. Ipeshtir gasps as he sees Tylendel lift her into the air – Tylendel notice tears running down her cheeks. He tries to keep her back towards the wind, worried about the cold, but as soon as she is airborne she goes limp.

Socks: “Mew.”

Ipeshtir: “I agree. Very impressive. I told you, Pábes: He can do whatever he wants.”

Pábes: “But he risks his health!”

Ipeshtir: “It’s what we must do if we are going to stop the Creeping God, right?”

Pábes: “But not too soon! First we must finish!”

Tylendel keeps his focus on flying her to the city, then parks her outside his window on Tamolyn Pahórek. Once she is hovering, Tylendel makes his way back to Eras.

Pábes: “Remember, we need a fragment of one of the Seals of Night. Two! We need two, but only one here.”

Tylendel wakes up in his cold room in the temple. He quickly stretches his muscles and goes to open the window. Seizing the spell, he flies Mulendobra inside. He cradles her, noticing she is unconscious or sleeping. He lets go of the spell, then carries her to his bed. He tucks her in and starts a fire before checking her for wounds. He heals her – her skin and flesh heal; her bones set, but don’t heal. That final spell takes his last strength. He undresses and crawls into bed with Mulendobra, holding her tight, hoping to warm her up. Then he falls asleep.

A door opens. Mulendobra is crying, breathing heavily. She is crawling down stone stairs. Behind her a shadow appears, of a man with two heads. She crawls down the stairs, the creature following her. Tylendel stands at the bottom of the stairs. “You can’t have me!” she says to the creature behind her. When she turns back to Tylendel, her belly is open, her guts trailing behind her. Tylendel tries to will her towards him, to no avail. Suddenly the two-headed man leaps towards her, landing right behind her. He looks at her with both his heads, then at Tylendel – One of the heads is Eld, the other Tylendel. He draws a dagger – her dagger – and stabs Eld in the eye.

Tylendel wakes. The fire is still burning. Mulendobra is still lying close to him, but he has kicked off his blanket. He is still groggy. He drinks some water then goes back to sleep.

The second time Tylendel wakes he feels rested. He feels like he has been asleep for a long while, and he suspects he has missed several important meetings. Mulendobra is lying still. She’s warm now, and her breath is even, though weak. She seems like she is asleep.

Looking out the window, it looks to Tylendel that it is late afternoon, and he hopes, in vain, that he is mistaken and that it is early morning. He notices a gathering of people near the shrine closest to the temple and gives up on the hope that it is morning.

Sitting on the only chair in his chamber, Tylendel meditates and tries to contact the Lady of Summer. He enters an almost dream state, and feels like he gets in touch with her. He asks her if it is safe that Mulendobra is here – he gets the feeling that if there is one place in Eras for her to find peace, is at the Hill. He asks the Lady if there is something she needs from him, and he gets a feeling that it is important to have control of the tunnels beneath the Hill.

Leaving his trance, he gets dressed and heads over to the infirmary. He asks about anyone asking for him and get told that someone has asked, but was told that Tylendel was meditating. He then talks to Ghoston about getting blankets and food for Mulendobra, asking about honey, but decides that it is easier to bring Mulendobra there. He fetches her, and lays her on a free bed. Ghoston and Wilmar are both intrigued about the woman. Tylendel tells them that she is the daughter of a god. Wilmar checks her over, determining that she has broken ribs, but that she is otherwise healthy. He does find a cut behind her ear. Tylendel asks Ghoston to look after her, then leave the temple.

Outside, Syr Peffer is on guard. Tylendel looks down to the shrine, looking for Syr Gylian. He spots some of the other knights there and assumes the Grosskomptur is there as well. He talks to Syr Peffer for a while, learning that the knight doesn’t care about Saint Nektul, the Lord of the Tomb. Tylendel recalls that there is some link between Saint Nektul and the Twilight Gate.

Bidding Syr Peffer farewell, Tylendel makes his way to the shrine. There are many people there, but Tylendel notice Syr Gylian, Lord Esmond and Lady Dorotei. He makes his way over to Duke Esmond. He looks very displeased with Tylendel, Tylendel having missed Esmond II’s funeral, but he relaxes slightly after Tylendel profusely apologizes.

Duke Esmond: “I understand.”

Saying his farewells, Tylendel next makes his way over to Syr Gylian. Again he apologize, this time for missing the morning’s meeting, then tells him that he was freeing a prisoner from the Crow-king. During the meeting a soldier comes to offer them ceremonial paint – Tylendel refuses. He tells Syr Gylian about what he has seen of both the Crow-king’s and Holy Sword’s armies. Eventually, Syr Gylian is called to the shrine, and Tylendel makes his way back to the temple.

At the temple, he speaks briefly with Syr Peffer about Esmond II’s funeral. He then enters checks on the bronze seal in the tunnels. Finding it whole and undamaged, he makes his way to the infirmary. Mulendobra is steel sleeping – Ghoston has cleaned her and is watching over her. Tylendel tells Ghoston to request some honey, on Tylendel’s behalf, then gathers two days’ worth of food and makes his way to his room.

In his room he meditates for a while before casting the flight spell he used on Mulendobra on himself. As he casts the spell, it seems as if angry spirits are dancing around him – when he looks out of the window, he can see more of them, floating over the ground. He wonders for a moment about what is going on, but decides it will have to wait. He writes a note that says “I’ll be back in a couple of days” and lays it on his table, then defenestrates himself and starts flying east, towards the Hall of the Watchers.

He flies through darkness and cold for a couple of hours, finally reaching the Lilyriver, Moondale, and the Hall of the Watchers. He flies in through the window of Captain Wilhon Ruis’ office in the First Circle, where he saw Quinton Messny’s room through the mirror. The room looks messier in person; there is a full chamber pot in a corner, pieces of cloth and armour in a pile. But there is a fire burning in the hearth, and Tylendel stands in front of it, regaining his inner warmth, Red Dancer leaning on the wall near him. He waits for Quinton Messny, preparing to separate his head from his body.
